Descendants of Robert COLQUHOUN & Jean Jane McKenzie


Robert Colquhoun was born on 10 February 1785 at Dumbarton, Dunbarton, Scotland, a son of James and Katherine Graham who was a weaver. On 21 July 1810 at Dumbarton he married Janet McKenzie who was born at Dumbarton about 1789. Together they had a family of seven children.

James Colquhoun born on 26 November 1810 at Dumbarton and was either stillborn or had died before 1815.


William Colquhoun born on 7 March 1812 at Dumbarton. He married Jane Henderson on 9 December 1836 at Barony, Glasgow - the daughter of John Henderson born c1811. They emigrated on 27 January 1848 to Port Phillip, on "Marchioness of Douglas". William died and was buried at Morrisons in Victoria on 9 April 1891, aged 80 years and was followed a very short time later by Jane who died on 18 April 1891 aged 81years.

They had three children all born at Barony, Glasgow:

  • Elizabeth Colquhoun born on 20 October 1837
  • William Colquhoun born on 8 July 1839. In 1876 he married Georgina Birrell  who was born about 1848 in Fifeshire, Scotland. William died on 29 November 1907, aged 66 years at Malvern, Victoria, and Georgina died 1 March 1921 aged 73 years at Murrumbeena, Victoria.

    William and Georgina had six children born at Moorabool, Victoria:
    • George Colquhoun born 1876
    • William Colquhoun born 1878 and died in 1960 aged 82 years at Fairfield, Victoria.
    • Agnes Jane Colquhoun born 1879 and died in 1952 aged 72 years at Parkville, Victoria, and was a school teacher by profession.
    • Jemima Colquhoun born in 1885 and in 1911 was married to Samuel Leslie Whitson, born at Springs to William and Sarah Ann Hicks. Samuel died in 1939 aged 64 years at Warrnambool, and Jemima died in 1967 at St. Kilda aged 85 years.
    • John Leslie Colquhoun was born in 1885 and died in 1964 aged 79 years at Dandenong,Victoria.
    • James Roy Colquhoun born 1888 Moorabool, Victoria

  • Jane Elizabeth Helen Colquhoun was born 2 February 1841, and in 1866 married Edward Boulton born c1833 in Wiltshire, the son of Thomas & Martha Francome.
    Edward died at the age of 45 years on 21 December 1878, and Jane died in 1924, aged 82 years, at Elaine, Victoria.
    Jane and her husband Edward had 5 children:
    • Albert Edward Boulton born in 1868 at Moorabool died in 1957 aged 89 years at Warrnambool, Victoria.  
    • Emma Grace Boulton born in 1870 died in 1955 aged 84 years at Belmont, Victoria. Emma was married in 1896 to Thomas Waldron Atchison who was born at Heidelberg, Victoria.
    • William John Boulton born in 1872 at Morrisons, Victoria.
    • Thomas Henry Boulton born in 1875 at Morrisons, Victoria.
    • Martha Isabel Boulton was born in 1877 at Morrisons, Victoria, and in 1908 she married William Henry Dickman born in 1864 Fyansford to William and Mary Muir. Martha died in 1938 aged 60 years at Meredith, Victoria and William died in 1948 at 83 years at Ballarat.

James Colquhoun born on 27 September 1815 at Dumbarton, and at Paisley Renfrew on 12 September 1840 he married Isabella Park, daughter of John Park & Janett Reid Isabella was born on 26 April 1818 at Cadder Lanark.

The 1851 census lists James as a calico printer and living at Espedair Street, Paisley Renfrew. James died on 1 March 1863 at Dumbarton aged 48 years. James and Isabella had six children:

  • Robert Colquhoun born on 2 July 1841 at Paisley Abbey, Renfrew
  • James Colquhoun born about 1845 at Paisley Renfrew
  • William Colquhoun born about 1849 at Paisley Renfrew. Died after 1851 census
  • Isabella Colquhoun born about 1851 at Paisley, Renfrew
  • Jeanie Colquhoun born 8 February 1853 at Paisley Abbey, Renfrew
  • William Colquhoun born 4 April 1862 at Dumbarton, Scotland

Robert Colquhoun born on 1 January 1818 at Dumbarton. He married Margaret Gibson daughter of David and Elizabeth Paterson on 13 December 1840 at Glasgow, Scotland.  Margaret was born 3 January 1814 at Kilhill, Wigtonshire. Robert was a shipwright, and the 1851 census list Margaret with three children as living at College Street, Dumbarton, and "husband away".  They arrived in Melbourne about February 1855 with his wife and three children.

Margaret died on 21 January 1858 aged 44 years at Emerald Hill, South Melbourne.

Robert and Margaret were my great, great grandparents, and had four children:

  • Elizabeth Anne Colquhoun born 7 November 1841 at Dumbarton and was my great grandmother. 
    She was married to Thomas Fletcher Higgins, and died on 9 January 1884 aged 42 years at South Melbourne. They had four children.

  • Robert Colquhoun born 29 May 1844 Govan, Lanark died prior to 1850 in Scotland
  • David Gibson Colquhoun was born 23 October 1847 Dumbarton, Scotland. He was married on 17 November 1869 at Emerald Hill to Margaret Angleton, born 1843 at Sydney, NSW to Richard and Mary Sullivan.  David was a fireman on coastal steamer "You Yangs", and deserted his wife and three children in 1876. Margaret died in 1909 aged 63years at Collingwood, Victoria.

    Their three children were:
    • Margaret Mary Colquhoun born on 25 July 1871 at Emerald Hill, Victoria. She was admitted to the Industrial School system in 1879, and  had been in the care of Mrs Elizabeth Anne Higgins, her aunt.
    • Richard Colquhoun born on 16 March 1873 at Emerald Hill was admitted to Industrial School in 1879
    • Francis Colquhoun born on 12 May 1875 at Emerald Hill died on 30 September 1893 aged 18years at the Swan Hill Hospital following a shooting accident and after his release from the Industrial School system. 
      The three children were admitted the the Industrial School system in 1879 as their parents were considered bad characters.

  • Robert Colquhoun born 2 February 1850 Dumbarton. On 8 August 1877 at the Presbyterian Church, West Melbourne he married Mary Ellen Cameron, born 1859 to John & Catherine Kaye.

    Robert's occupation was given as a Engineer, and died on 16 March 1942 aged 92 years at Annandale, NSW. In 1917 his address was given as 71 Breillat Street, Annandale, and in 1942 lived at 258 Johnston Street. He was buried on 17 March 1942 at Congregational Cemetery Field of Mars, NSW.

    Robert and Mary had four children: 
    • Catherine Eveline Colquhoun born on 2 October 1878 at Carlton, Victoria, and was married in 1899 Balmain North, NSW, to William Jacob Henley. In 1942 Catherine lived at Battersea Street, Abbotsford, NSW.
    • Robert John Colquhoun born in 1882 at Balmain, NSW and was married in 1906 at Sydney, NSW to Ellen Maria Agnew, born 1873 in Maitland, NSW. Ellen died in 1946 at Balmain followed by Robert who died in 1959.
    • Millicent M. Colquhoun born 1894 at Balmain South, NSW and was married in 1920 at Mosman, NSW to Alexander C. Wallace
    • David Colquhoun born in 1898 Balmain North, NSW and died 8 November 1917 aged 19 years as a Trooper, killed in action WWI, and remembered with honour at the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

After the death of Margaret Gibson, Robert Colquhoun  (the father born in 1818) remarried on 5 July 1859 at Yarrabank, Emerald Hill, Victoria to Elizabeth Turner born on 9 January 1833 at Cardross, Dunbarton. Robert died on 28 November 1892 aged 75 years, and is buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery Pres. K401a with his second wife Elizabeth.

From this second marriage five children were born at Emerald Hill, South Melbourne:

  • Andrew Turner Colquhoun born May 1860 and died 2 November 1912 aged 52 years at Williamstown. He first married in 1881 to Ada Barbara Black born in 1863 at Sydney, NSW, the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Branner.

    Ada died on 3 March 1898 aged 34 years at Essendon, Victoria, and there were six children from this marriage:
    • Robert James Colquhoun born 1884 in Melbourne, and married in 1905  to Ada Higgins born in 1886 at Port Melbourne. Robert died on 8 October 1918 aged 34 years at Heidelberg, and Ada died on 20 August 1946 aged 60 years at Camberwell, Victoria.
    • Andrew Herbert Colquhoun born 1886 in Melbourne and died on 4 December 1913 aged 28 years at Cheltenham. In 1907 he married to Elizabeth McLeod Barty born at Williamstown North.
    • Charles George Gordon Colquhoun born 1888 at South Melbourne. In 1910 he married Ethel May McNicol born 1886 at Williamstown North. Charles died on 7 February 1956 at Williamstown, and Ethel died on 8 December 1972 aged 86 years, and is also buried in Williamstown Cemetery.
    • Norman Leslie Colquhoun born in 1890 at Williamstown, and died on 9 January 1911 aged 20 years at East Melbourne.
    • Ernest Leonard Colquhoun born in 1894 at Williamstown,Victoria.
    • Inez Elizabeth Victoria Colquhoun born in 1897 at Williamstown, and died 1934 aged 37 years at Cheltenham. She married William Charles Anderson in 1925.

    Andrew's second marriage was in 1899 to Catherine McNicol, born in 1868 to James & Ann Sutherland. Catherine died on 3 June 1948 aged 80 years at Williamstown and is buried at Williamstown Cemetery.

    There were three children from the second marriage:
    • James Turner Colquhoun born in 1901 at South Melbourne, and died in 1977 aged 75 years at Footscray, Victoria.
    • John Sutherland Colquhoun born in 1906 at Williamstown, and died in 1985 aged 78 years at Williamstown
    • Jean Mavis Colquhoun born in 1910 at Williamstown, and died on 5 April 1917 aged 7 years at Clifton Hill, Victoria.
  • William Milbree Colquhoun born 8 December 1862. William was admitted to Industrial School system in 1878, of Colin's Hotel, Yarrabank. In 1889 he married Jeanie Mitchell, daughter of Archibald and Jean. Jeanie was born in 1868 in Scotland, and died in 1895 aged 27 years. Jeanie was buried on 19 Jan 1895 at St Kilda Cemetery, Other Denominations, Monumental Grave Comp.C 76B.

    They had one child:
    • John Colquhoun born in 1894 at Armadale, Victoria, and died 1921 aged 27 years at Geelong, Victoria.  John was buried on 2 April 1921 at St Kilda Cemetery, Other Denominations, Monumental Grave Comp.C 76B.
  • Jane McKenzie Colquhoun born 2 December 1865. She was admitted to the Industrial School System in 1880 as her mother was an alcoholic. In 1909 she married Richard Joseph Davis born 1860 Tarraville, Victoria, son of Richard & Margaret Tobin.

  • Arthur Colquhoun born in 1868 and may have been adopted.

  • John McMurchie Colquhoun was born 1872, and as a Private number 1460 in the AIF was killed in action on 4 September 1916, and is remembered at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France. John had married in 1897 to Adeline Elizabeth Harrison, born in 1878 at Dandenong, Victoria. Adeline died on 17 April 1951 aged 73 years at Moonee Ponds, Victoria.

    John and Adeline had four children:
    • Ethel Myrtle Colquhoun born in 1898 at Carlton North, and died on 6 April 1899 aged 4 months at Newstead,Victoria.
    • Rosina Agnes Colquhoun born in 1901 at Carlton,Victoria, and died in 1975 aged 74 years Nathalia, Victoria. In 1928 she married Hubert John Pederick, born 1896 at Merrigum,Victoria, and died in 1959 aged 63 years at Nathalia, Victoria.
    • Edith Florence Colquhoun was born in 1904 at Essendon, Victoria and died in 1974 aged 69 years at Wodonga, Victoria. Edith married Charles William Black in 1927.
    • Minnie Isabel Colquhoun was born in 1910 at Essendon,Vic.

Arthur Colquhoun
was born on 24 March 1820 at Dumbarton, Scotland. At Carriage Hill, Abbey Renfrew on 6 April 1844 he married Elizabeth Millar, born 24 March 1822 at Beith, Ayr. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Millar and Margaret Barbour.

The 1851 census gives their address as South Campbell Street, Paisley, Renfrew, and Arthur's profession was a calico printer.

Arthur and Elizabeth had 4 children:

Agnes Colquhoun born 17 January 1822 Dumbarton, Scotland


Catherine Colquhoun born c1826 was married on 30 November 1852 at Dumbarton to John Gibson, born on 10 February 1826 at St. Marylebone, London. The 1851 census lists John Gibson as a ship's carpenter, and  was living with his sister Margaret Colquhoun.

Catherine died on 7 November 1872 aged 46 years.
