The Foden Family from Cheshire

James Foden was born on 29 April 1810 at Astbury, Cheshire. About 1832 he married Elizabeth Burrows in the London area, born about 1812 in London as the daughter of George Burrows and Martha Allen.

James' occupation is listed as a farrier and also a whitesmith. Elizabeth died in 1873 at Chelsea, and James died in 1880 also at Chelsea.
They had nine children.   
  • Jane Foden was born about 1833 at Chelsea, London, baptised in 1838 at St. Luke's Church, Chelsea, and emigrated to Australia on the "Taymouth Castle", arriving in Adelaide on 25 June 1855. On 27 June 1859 she married William Rich at St. James Church, Blackiston.  William was born on 19 February 1815 at Hawkhurst in Kent, and had emigrated to Australia arriving at Adelaide on the "Olivia" on 14 November 1853.

    Willliam died on 3 January 1899 at Goodwood, South Australia, and Jane died at Millicent. S.A. on 27 September 1901. They had five children:
    • Amy Foden Rich was born 10 November 1858 at Mt. Torrens, S.A., and died on1 June 1943 at  Mt. Gambier, S.A. aged 84 years.
    • George James Rich was born 30 September 1860 near Mt. Torrens, S.A, and died 18 June 1927 at Wagga Wagga, N.S.W., aged 66 years.
    • Jesse Rich was born 19 December 1862 near Mt. Torrens, S.A., and died on 26 August 1925 at Horsham, Vic. aged 62 years.
    • Francis Rich was born 21 May 1865, near Mt. Torrens, S.A., and died 22 November 1953 at Surrey Hills, Vic., aged 88 years.
    • Charles Rich was born on 12 May 1868 at, Mt Gambier, S.A., and died 9 February 1938 at Prahran, Vic., aged 69 years.

    • Lillian Mary Foden was born in 1882 at Battersea, and was married to Frederick Alexander in 1904 at Lambeth. They had three children.



    • Beatrice Jane Foden was born in March 1884 at Battersea, and in 1905 was married to Archibald Alecock. They had four children.

Continuing from the original lineage from James Foden and Elizabeth Burrows in Chelsea, of the nine children born to them the four youngest children were all girls.
 
  • Elizabeth Foden was born on 21 November 1845 at Arthur Street, Chelsea and died in December 1931 aged 85 years. The 1901 census lists her occupation as a dressmaker. 


  • Hannah/Anna Foden was born in December 1848, and died in September 1850 at Chelsea as an infant. [ Her birth was registered as Hannah, however at the time of her death it was recorded as Anna.]


  • Emma Foden was born in June 1851 and died in September 1852 at Chelsea as an infant.


  • Ann Foden was born in March 1854 at Chelsea, and died after 1861.
